VOX is the only theatre company exclusively devoted to producing and presenting shows for young audiences in Ottawa, in Ontario, and in French-speaking Canada outside of Quebec. Aimed at preschool- (ages 2 to 6) and school-aged (ages 6 to 12) children as well as preteens (ages 10-14), the company’s rich and varied offerings touch on current challenges in an entertaining way that aims to inspire and shape the adults of tomorrow.
Through events and initiatives such as the Série Enfance Jeunesse (in collaboration with La Nouvelle Scène Gilles Desjardins, Théâtre de la Vieille 17 and Théâtre Catapulte) and the Tout Petit Festival, VOX creates various opportunities for meetings and dialogue, cultural mediation and artistic education that engages audiences of all ages.
VOX stands out by creating emotional and bold shows that play with various forms of theatral arts, music, set designs, and puppets. The company offers its artists a vast theatrical playground where, through creation and research, they give life to stories and characters that the audience can never forget.
VOX creates shows aimed at young audiences who are concerned about the environment. By choosing, wherever possible, to design sets, puppets, and costumes with reusable or recycled materials, VOX creates a dialogue around this crucial issue. In some cases, this discussion can help alleviate the young audience’s eco-anxiety.
Openness to others and dialogue are an integral part of our programming. In everything we do, our aim is to bring unity to our diverse community and help it flourish. Through artistic and culturation mediation initiatives, young people can express their creativity to the fullest. Art education activities for all audiences lead to a greater appreciation of the arts.
As fate would have it, the troupe who would eventually become VOX Théâtre staged its first production in a Vanier classroom. During the 1979-80 season, a few Ottawa high school students were involved in the creation of the small company, until five of them remained: Pier Rodier, Lucie Desjardins, Marie-Thé Morin, Luc Dorion and Louis Robillard. The group would remain unchanged for 7 years, a longevity record in French-speaking Ontario.
